The story of Glastet’s House begins in the 17th century west-hole forests and the glass-inspired former Officer of Karl XII’s Army Gustaf Ruthensparre. He saw the nature opportunity in the area around Limmared to run a Glasbruk. Ruthensparre settled on Limmareds Säteri (today still in operation and with a farm shop) and the glass production at Limmareds Glasbruk was a fact in 1740.
Production flourished and in the late 19th century, Fredrik Brusewitz came into the picture. Then Oxabanan was built (now a nice walkway that goes outside Glasets Hus) with the purpose of transporting goods and materials between glassworks and the nearest railway in Ulricehamn. Strong oxen were used for this purpose. Press glasses and beautiful things were blown in the cabin for smooth life.
During the 1900s, the mill was made to Aktiebolag and the manufacture was mostly from glassware, window glass to press glass, ornamental glass, bottles and pharmacy bottles. The cabin consisted of good glass blowers and, in some cases, hyttsnokar; children who worked for the most part, for example support, bid and cleaning.
Around the square in Limmared there were several shops and cafés and one of them was Svenna-Lovisa’s shop and cafe. Here, coffee, cakes, sugar beads and wheat balls were served to hungry glass blowers and glue nuts. But above all, the cottage bags were well taken care of and offered both the one and the other sweets. Svenna-Lovisa is today inspiration for Glasets Hus’s own café and restaurant.
Industrialism also affected the glass industry, and since its progress, as we all know, it has increasingly begun to be controlled by machines.
The glass blowers have been replaced and the production looks in the late 1900s until today completely different from the beginning of 1740.
Today, several million glass products are manufactured annually, and the company whose name is Ardagh Group is one of the largest employers in the municipality with about 500 employees.
Production ranges between baby food cans, the coca cola bottle and the ABSOLUT vodka bottle.
